Modesto integrates input materials, ecosystem, workforce and infrastructure

Food & Beverage

Forget your old notions of food and beverage processing. Modesto’s modern food and beverage ecosystem extends from diverse agricultural sources and products to packaging and distribution, and leads in green energy efficiency.

The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District has partnered with Frito-Lay, a division of PepsiCo, to implement an industry-leading showcase for environmentally sustainable manufacturing, warehousing and distribution, transforming the 500,000-square-foot Modesto, Calif. manufacturing site – one of Frito-Lay's largest in the United States. Frito-Lay aims to replace all of its existing diesel-powered freight equipment with zero-emission (ZE) and near-zero emission (NZE) technologies.

The project integrates an incredible array of commercially available and pre-commercial ZE and NZE technologies in a number of applications. In addition to the fleet assets, an on-site renewable energy generation (solar PV) and energy storage systems will be installed to better serve the energy needs of the manufacturing facility and warehouses.

packaging

Modesto’s manufacturing ecosystem includes innovative solutions in glass, paper, and plastic packaging.

We Are California Pure

We are California’s largest single site user of recycled glass, purchasing over 20% of all glass recycled in the State. Nearly 175,000 tons of glass is recycled and diverted from landfills annually. Each Gallo Glass bottle contains up to 75% recycled glass. From sand and soda ash to limestone and cullet, Gallo Glass sources all of its major raw materials within the state of California.

AggrePlex™: Sustainable Solutions For The Concrete Industry

AggrePlex™ is a waste-to-value company that leverages revolutionary micronization and air-classification technology to develop pozzolanic materials from low-value waste streams.

Over the past decade, the concrete industry has been looking for a supplemental cementitious material (SCM) solution that will lower its carbon footprint without sacrificing on performance.

AggrePlex™ manufactures PozzoDyne™, a cost-competitive supplemental cementitious material (SCM) that lowers CO2 emissions and enhances concrete performance defined by short-term strength, long-term strength, ASR mitigation, durability, and resistivity.

Benefits of Pozzolanic Materials

  • Improved Durability: The pozzolanic reaction consumes free calcium hydroxide, leading to a denser and less permeable concrete structure that is more resistant to chemical attack.

  • Enhanced Strength: The formation of additional CSH contributes to the long-term strength of the concrete.

  • Reduced Environmental Impact: By replacing a portion of Portland cement, pozzolans reduce the amount of CO₂ emissions associated with cement production.

  • Mitigation of Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR): Pozzolans help to reduce the risk of ASR, a damaging reaction that can occur between reactive silica in the aggregate and the alkalis in cement.

  • Lower Heat of Hydration: The filling effect and slower reaction rates of pozzolans can lower the heat generated during concrete curing, which is beneficial for large concrete structures.

circular economy

Modesto is in the center of the first AA-Rated Bioeconomy Development Opportunity zone for wood feedstock-based bioproducts.

BEAM Circular

BEAM Circular is working to to unlock the power of communities to transform waste into economic prosperity and environmental solutions. We believe that every person should have access to a good job, clean air and water, and a thriving community.

We work as an “action tank” to accelerate new solutions through a portfolio of public-private projects, collaborative programs, and targeted investments that scale transformative innovations in industrial biomanufacturing. Our initiatives are designed to build a vibrant regional ecosystem for the circular bioeconomy in California’s agricultural heartland, anchored in the North San Joaquin Valley.

“BEAM” stands for BioEconomy, Agriculture, & Manufacturing — reflecting the industry intersections where we focus our work. “Circular” represents our dedication to enabling solutions that reduce and repurpose waste, stewarding our natural resources and supporting healthy communities.

Modesto's robust manufacturing sector produces foods you depend on, wines and beverages you enjoy, innovative packaging that makes life easier, state of the art tooled products, even the most durable pet toys.
